New Ulster Junior Record for Larne Swim Team

Larne’s 14 – 15 years old boys’ Freestyle Relay team took Ulster by storm on Sunday 17th April when they competed in the Ulster Age Group Championships in Lisburn.

Conor Leaney, Shane Traill, Gavin Williamson and Wilson Logan made up the team and each swam exciting legs of the race to finish in 1st place – their closest rivals 6 seconds behind them.

Not only did they take 1st place, they set a new Ulster Age Group record and an Ulster Junior record. An impressive achievement for boys so young, as swimmers up to 18 years of age compete for the Ulster Junior title.

The record set in 1990 by Bangor was broken by the 16 – 18 years old team from City of Belfast in the event before Larne’s but not to be outdone, the Larne swim team certainly excelled when they pulled out all the stops and stormed home smashing rival City of Belfast’s time to set a new record of 1.42.80. A record which is sure to stand until they crack it again!

Ulster Age Group Swimming Championships

Larne Swimming Club made a splash at the first weekend of the Ulster Age Group Swimming Championships which were held at Lisburn Leisureplex on Saturday 16th and Sunday 17th April.

A total of 36 swimmers took part, many of whom successfully reached finals and 25 medals were attained. It was an eventful weekend with numerous swimmers recording PBs, four swimmers (Owen Williamson, Sarah Moore, Eimear Black and Gavin Williamson) gaining qualifying times to compete in the Irish Age Group (Division 1) Championships and two swimmers (Stephen Andrews and Jennifer Gibson) gaining qualifying times to compete in the Irish Age Groups (Division 2) Championships.

The success did not stop there. Conor Leaney set a new Ulster Age Group record in the 100m freestyle with a time of 55.17 and Wilson Logan set two new Ulster Age Group records in the 200m freestyle (1.59.50) and 400IM (4.51.50).

The girls’ 14-15 years old freestyle team relay (Laura Heaton, Eimear Black, Shereena Donley and Ciara Campbell) and the 16 – 18 years old medley & freestyle team relays (Kate Gordon, Caroline Gordon, Helen Watson and Niamh Gilmore) were placed 3rd.

Not to be out done, team mates Conor Leaney, Gavin Williamson, Shane Traill and Wilson Logan took 1st place in the medley team relay setting a new Ulster Age Group record with a time of 1.58.34. They continued to make waves when they smashed the Ulster Age Group record and the Ulster Junior record in the freestyle team relay in a time of 1.42.80.
