Irish Senior Schools' Championships

The Irish Senior Schools’ Championships took place on Friday 3rd & Saturday 4th February at the National Aquatic Centre, Dublin.

Five of Larne Swimming Club's members represented their respective schools in individual events each performing to an excellent standard for which they deserve enormous praise.

Laura Wylie, Belfast Royal Academy, was the first of the Larne swimmers to compete. On Friday night she swam a personal best time of 2.44.95 in the junior individual medley. She was then successful in reaching the final of the breast stroke on Saturday and recorded a time of 1.22.80.

Caroline Gordon, also Belfast Royal Academy, was successful in reaching the senior girl's final and was placed 2nd in a time of 1.18.20. Niamh Gilmore, St Dominics, also reached the senior girl's final and swam a great race. Her best time on the day was recorded as 1.20.62.

The intermediate boys also swam well. Gavin Williamson, Ballyclare High School swam an excellent race in the breast stroke and recorded a personal best time of 1.14.15 narrowly missing the final to be placed as first reserve. He also swam a good freestyle race in a time of 57.88 which was just outside his PB.

Conor Leaney, Ballyclare Secondary School was successful in reaching two finals. In an exciting final of the butterfly, Conor swam a magnificent race when he broke the minute and recorded a time of 59.81 and took 1st place. His success continued when he swam the final of the freestyle and took 3rd place in a time of 54.22. Conor will now travel to Scotland to compete as part of the Irish Schools’ Team.
